Cascade Canyon Residence
Our clients purchased the property with a tiny run-down 1950’s house on it with plans to build their dream home. The site was the perfect setting to do it, large and steeply up-sloped, in one of the sunniest neighborhoods in Mill Valley and with incredible cross-canyon and Mt. Tam views. The existing house was demolished and in its place we designed this four bedroom home customized to fit their lifestyle. Design emphasis was placed on fulfilling their everyday needs by creating an open plan environment with a very strong connection to the outdoors. Due to the up-sloping nature, the ideal place for the living spaces was obviously upstairs for the views and connection to rear yard, yet the entry belonged on the first floor. We solved this by creating a two-story entry, which connects the living spaces via a dynamic, tall volume. The kitchen is the hub of this house, with a built-in dining nook and a direct connection to the rear yard patio space. The living room flows seamlessly to a large deck (which sits on the first floor roof) with a full width opening folding door system. The master bedroom also enjoys the beautiful views and has its own private patio. The master bathroom has a large two person steam shower and has a door which leads directly to an outdoor shower. This is an unusually warm microclimate area of Mill Valley with direct western sun exposure – so while we provided floor-to-ceiling glass for the views we designed a trellis for much needed shade.
